The movie is based on the character of Uncle Drew, a basketball player portrayed by NBA star Kyrie Irving in a series of Pepsi Max commercials. The plot follows Drew and his old basketball squad, now senior citizens, as they compete in a street basketball tournament. The film stars Irving alongside a cast of veteran basketball players, including Shaquille O'Neal, Reggie Miller, Chris Webber and Lisa Leslie.
Lisa Leslie is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the WNBA for 12 seasons. She was a three-time WNBA MVP and a four-time Olympic gold medalist. Leslie played for the Los Angeles Sparks and was the first player to dunk in a WNBA game. After retiring, she became a television analyst and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.
